In this article published by Healthing, The advocacy organization Parlons Obésité, the French division of Obesity Matters, authored a report to the National Assembly notating the importance of regarding obesity as a disease. Specifically, the report points out that around 30% of the population – or 3 million Quebec citizens – are impacted with obesity.
Specifically, the report makes explicit mention of Quebec’s outdated obesity framework, which fails to provide wide-reaching access to “therapeutic interventions” available to and within the public system.
Not only that, but pharmaceutical obesity treatments are excluded from public insurance plans.
Perhaps the most compelling argument, however, is the notion that obesity is a risk factor for over 200 health conditions, which can substantially impact life expectancy, quality of life, and more.
It is within Quebec’s interest – economically, morally, and otherwise – to regard obesity as the disease it is.
